A progressively fatal, motor neuron disease that is caused by the degeneration of nerve cells in the central nervous system that control ones muscle movement. The disorder causes muscle weakness and deterioration throughout the body as both the upper and lower motor neurons degenerate, ceasing to send messages to muscles. With ones muscles being unable to function correctly, they begin to weaken and deteriorate over time leaving the patient with little to no muscle tissue left. Some of the initial symptoms of ALS can sometimes be overseen because the patient may not know exactly whether these symptoms are ALS or not. These beginning symptoms include twitching, cramping, or stiffness of affected muscles which lead to weakness affecting ones arm or leg. Also as these symptoms set in more, slurred and nasal speech may occur. The reason one may acquire symptoms such as twitching, cramping, etc. is because those are what one feels as the results of dying motor neurons. If you are having these twitching or cramping symptoms but no overall muscle weakness it is more than likely not ALS.
