Glaucoma

High eye pressure that can damage the optic nerve. When the optic nerve is damage one has Glaucoma. This condition is often caused by an increase of fluid pressures in one’s eye. The rough pressures cause firmness within the retina and the optic nerve which can severely damage ones eye. Glaucoma at a much more mature stage can cause partial vision loss, with blindness being the next worse scenario. There are a few different types of symptoms one should be aware of when diagnosing glaucoma, open-angle glaucoma, angle-closure glaucoma, congenital glaucoma. Open-angle glaucoma is a more common form of glaucoma that is usually painless and unidentifiable until the patient has loss vision. Most open-angle glaucoma patients have a gradual buildup of pressure in their eyes and don’t realize they have glaucoma until their vision is loss. The second type of glaucoma (closure-angle glaucoma) is much rarer but sudden ocular pains may arise. Usually patients with closure-angle glaucoma have symptoms of seeing halos around lights, red eyes, high eye pressures, nausea and vomiting, sudden decrease in vision and mid-dilated pupils. The final type of glaucoma called congenital glaucoma usually occurs when a child is very young, maybe a few months. Symptoms that follow are cloudiness in the front of the eye, swelling of one or both eyes, red eye, tearing and sensitivity to light.
